INT. CONDO HALLWAY – NEXT EVENING
Quiet. Warm light. The hallway where it started. Lila stands outside Elias's door holding two cups of tea. Rested for the first time in days. Not untouched — just clearer. She knocks. Elias opens — no tie, sleeves rolled, book in hand. One look and he understands this is not accidental.
ELIAS
Hi.
LILA
Hi. I come bearing emotionally symbolic beverages.
ELIAS
Dangerous.
Neither smiles fully. This matters too much. He steps aside.
ELIAS (CONT'D)
Come in?
LILA
No. I wanted the hallway.
He looks around, then back at her, understanding. The place where they almost touched. Almost said it. Where restraint became love. She hands him one cup. Their fingers brush. Steadier now. Chosen.
LILA (CONT'D)
You told me to ask you tomorrow.
ELIAS
I did.
She takes a breath. No armor this time.
LILA
I want you when I'm not scared. When I've slept. When nobody is threatening me. When it costs something real. I want the kind of desire that doesn't make me disappear from myself. I want to do this right even if it burns a little getting there.
He closes his eyes for one brief second. Not to avoid her. To absorb the mercy of hearing it.
ELIAS
All right.
LILA
That's all?
A faint smile.
ELIAS
No.
He sets the tea on the little table by his door.
ELIAS (CONT'D)
I want you too. I have for longer than was especially convenient.
That gets a small breath-laugh from her. Then silence again. Deep. Charged. No crisis left to hide inside. Only them.
LILA
And now?
His gaze drops once to her mouth, then returns to her eyes. Permission matters. Everything matters.
ELIAS
Now, if I kiss you, it's because we both asked for it awake.
She nods once. Barely. Enough. He lifts a hand to her face. Pauses — giving her every chance to step back. She leans in instead.
So he kisses her. Not frantic. Not careless. Deeply wanted, deeply restrained — the kind of kiss that says the line held for a reason. It lasts just long enough to change both of them. Then he pulls back first. Forehead almost touching hers.
LILA
Okay.
ELIAS
That's all?
She opens her eyes.
LILA
No. But I'm trying to be good.
He looks at her with something like wonder. And recognition.
ELIAS
Unevenly?
That makes her laugh for real.
LILA
Unevenly.
Across the hall, Ruth's door cracks open an inch. Then Nina's.
RUTH
If either of you ruins this by becoming weird, I'm moving.
NINA
Also if there's a wedding, I'm doing flowers.
Lila leans her head against Elias's shoulder for one fleeting second. Then straightens. Still herself. Still present.
LILA
Also — I start Tuesday nights. The county course. Ruth's brochure.
ELIAS
Property management.
LILA
Somebody should run a building like this on purpose.
He looks at her the way a man looks at a future arriving — hers, first.
LILA (CONT'D)
Tea's getting cold.
ELIAS
That seems survivable.
He picks up the cups and offers her one again. This time, instead of stepping inside, they stay in the hallway. Side by side. No urgency now. Just the beginning of something they did not rush past the truth to get.
FADE OUT.
